Hey everyone!
Brad, hope you don't mind that I'm starting a new thread. I think this is a pretty cool topic considering the era that swing comes from and some of the old movies that include some awesome dancing.
Ok, the first thing I want everyone to do is go to your TV set and see if you get channel 68, Turner Classic Movies (TCM). It seems that only certain towns on LI get it. If you get it, start watching it cause there's some great stuff on there. Here are some recent movies from there that would be of interest:
A Day at the Races starring the Marx Brothers. Check out the awesome swing dance scene towards the later half of the flick in the barn. Lots of slap-stick comedy.
Buck Privates starring Abbott and Costello. This movie also stars the infamous Andrews Sisters and has one of the best swing dance scenes I've yet to see in a movie. Great comedy too!
This Land is Mine starring Maureen O'Hara. Although this movie has nothing to do with swing, I felt it important to post considering the era it comes from. It's pretty intense - the plot takes place in France during the WWII German occupation. What an incredible plot for this movie, and what blows me away is the fact that it was made in 1942 - that's during the war folks!!
Next Friday starting at 5, TCM is doing a Bing Crosby and Bob Hope marathon. If you don't get TCM, I'll keep posting the latest flicks so if anyone is interested you can check out your local video store or library. These are great movies that really give you a perspective on the time we are all trying to emulate when we dance.
