It seems as if our usual "summer inflation" of the LI swing scene has arrived with many new faces in the mix and some familiar returnees. There is something unusual about this season though. We have been experiencing a forward progression (as opposed to the regular stagnation) in our little scene with things such as the rotating DJs, the organization of the lesson schedule, Tom's ressurecting the big band, and our upcoming "DJ Battle Royale".
As many of you know I have never been particularly optimistic when it comes to judging our events but I have to say my opinion has been changing lately. For a change things are getting done and interest is on the rise. If there is any doubt to this I refer you to the DJ schedule and how there is only one slot open between now and July 18th. People who I never thought would get involved with such things are booking a month in advance to participate. Heck, I've been doing more dancing each week than I have in probably 2 years.
All that being said, I think this would be an opportune time to ride the wave and really start promoting the scene. With the number of summer concerts and other events (I have a few to post as well) there will be many opportunities for FUN and the possibility of a real revitalization. I don't just mean telling people about other dance events but also getting some of our own regulars involved again with things such as this message board.
I know there are many who were discouraged from posting in the past for one reason or another and others out there who think this is just an online clique. Lets make a conscious effort to break those misconceptions and get more people involved. Afterall, the original point was to create a Long Island "scene" and I think that is something that can be realized with our continued effort.
